A permanent home for Seattle Chamber Music Society is coming downtown

An art form that some may hastily judge as outdated proves it is alive, thriving and as relevant as ever in Seattle. Seattle Chamber Music Society (SCMS) has announced the creation of a new venue, exclusively for chamber music, in downtown Seattle. This Center for Chamber Music will be the city’s first permanent home for the performance, recording and education of the music form.
“Most concert halls ask chamber music to adapt to the room. This hall is being designed around chamber music itself,” said John Holloway, SCMS’s Dr. Oliver E. Cobb Chief Executive Officer. “Every decision—from the acoustics and sightlines to the audience amenities and artist spaces—is centered on creating what we believe will be one of the finest chamber music experiences anywhere in the world. This Center is an investment in artistic excellence, in downtown Seattle, and in ensuring that our city remains an international destination for chamber music for generations to come.”
Not only is SCMS creating a new home for the organization, but they are also contributing to the revitalization of downtown, bringing a new performance option to a central location that has been suffering since the pandemic. Located in the U.S. Bank Building at 6th and Union, the Center for Chamber Music will be on the same block as the 5th Avenue Theatre and Museum of Illusions.
The Center will include at 271-seat concert hall, a hospitality suite for visiting artists, a rehearsal space, and the offices for SCMS. With an opening date slated for early 2028, construction will begin this winter. — Ciara
