A Welcome from the Artistic Director
Johamy Morales
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the Pacific Northwest world premiere of The Pigeon Gets A Big Time Holiday Extravaganza! — a playful, musical celebration rooted in what it means to be part of a community. This production is more than a holiday show — it’s a love letter to community, to the magic of presence over presents, and to the beautiful messiness of chosen family, found family, and the powerful act of showing up for each other. Inspired by the irrepressible energy of Mo Willems’ beloved The Pigeon, this extravaganza is bursting with heart, humor, and holiday spirit.
The journey to bring The Pigeon Gets A Big Holiday Extravaganza! to life has been nothing short of extraordinary. It began with a unique and exciting collaboration between us and six other theatres across the country: First Stage, Children’s Theatre of Madison, Dallas Children’s Theatre, The Rose Theatre, The Coterie Theatre and Mainstreet Theatre.
All joining forces to commission this new work from afar and now has become a shining example of what can happen when we lean into working together, shared vision, and a collective belief in the power of storytelling. This show would not exist without the trust, collaboration, and creativity of these amazing institutions and artists who dared to dream big.
At its heart, this story is about connection — about what it means to give your full self to the people around you. In a season where the world tends to speed up, the act of coming to the theatre to see The Pigeon reminds us to slow down, to listen, to laugh, and to remember that our presence — not the perfect gift or the biggest plans — is what really matters. We know that family can look different for everyone — whether it’s the one you’re born into or the one you find along the way — and this story celebrates all the beautiful shapes that family can take. In that way, The Pigeon isn’t just throwing a holiday party — they’re inviting all of us to remember that we belong to each other.
Thank you for being here, for being part of this community, and for making the theatre — this sacred gathering place of shared stories — a part of your holiday season!
Johamy Morales
Artistic Director
Welcome to the Extravaganza!
A Note From Director Alyza DelPan-Monley
We are here to throw a huge-mongous party! And you’re invited! It’s going to be a big-time holiday extravaganza filled with singing, dancing, hosted by the Unlimited Squirrels, including party guests Elephant Gerald, Piggie, and The Pigeon! It’s going to be spectacular, wonderful and splendid…right?
While we might associate holidays and parties with all the feel-good feelings of connection, joy, and celebration, that is not always the case for everyone. Holidays can also bring forward some difficult feelings: party-planning overwhelm, fear of being left out or not belonging, gift-giving anxiety. Is it okay to feel bad when all signs tell us that we should feel good and full of holiday cheer?
In our musical, three storylines take on this complicated question. Each character has their own unique emotional reaction, but after acknowledging their worries and fears, they discover how to move through their feelings with the help of their friends.
The Pigeon’s Journey: On the surface seemingly grouchy and against the party, The Pigeon sets off to solve his problems alone. But along the way, we learn that these apparent problems (lack of presents, not being allowed to drive the sleigh) are just manifestations of The Pigeon’s deeper insecurity: a worry that they are not a part of the group and a fear that they will be left out of the party. With the help of Piggie, Gerald, and the Squirrels, The Pigeon realizes that even though they’re different, they can still belong.
Gerald and Piggies Journey: Even the best of friends who seem to know each other inside and out can have their doubts. Sparked by Gerald’s fear that he doesn’t know Piggie well enough and did not do a good job picking out their present, Piggy and Gerald’s anxiety grows into self-doubt: Did I do a good job? Can I be trusted? Am I enough? What if they don’t like the present and then what if they don’t like me. I’m sure we can all relate to those feelings, and as Piggie and Gerald remind us through the play, friendship really is the thought that counts. When you are genuine about your relationships, the gift is not as important as the gesture and sentiment.
Unlimited Squirrel’s Journey: The squirrels have big dreams and lots of energy, and in this play we see them bite off more than they can chew. How relatable! They make big party plans and quickly realize that their plans are too big and not achievable. In-Between Squirrel reminds us that we don’t have to live in the extreme binaries of ALL or NOTHING, but that finding the sweet spot of what we can do together can be just right. We can do a lot with what we already have.

Planning Your Own Extravaganza!
with Director Alyza DelPan-Monley
If you enjoy our party and want to throw your own this holiday season, here are a few tips to planning your extravaganza!
- Find something to celebrate: You don’t need a big reason. Start by thinking about what brings you joy and see if you can cultivate a little more of that in your life. Maybe you like reading so you could host a reading party. Or if you like hats, you can have a silly hat party.
- Surround yourself with good company: Who are the people your life that make you feel good. Who do you feel like you can be your truest self around? Invite them to your party! And ask them if they want to help host the party so that you don’t have to do it alone. The difficult work is quicker and more fun with friends around.
- Joy is not required: Of course we always want to feel good, and we hope that parties will make us feel better, but it is important to remember that your emotions are valid, and its okay if things feel upsetting, sad or difficult. Sometimes you get sick, or snowed in, or plans fall through. Make room for your feelings, invite them to the party too. Acknowledge and share your feelings, and maybe your friends can help.
- Find your in-between: Dreaming big is important, but sometimes it can be just as important to embrace what’s possible in the now. Think about your current resources - time, money, energy, supplies - and what is actually feasible with what you have available. A party does not have to be big to be fantastic. You can have a dance party on zoom with some family and friends in different time zones. You can blow out a candle. Or mail a card. You can regift a present. Or learn a song. You can take a deep breath. As long as the party is with what you have and for what you need, that will be the just-right amount huge-mongous celebration.
- Create meaning and create memories: Much like making a play, an extravaganza is an opportunity to say that life has special and wonderful gifts within it that are worth celebrating. Holidays come around every year, but the care and meaning we imbue them with can make them truly spectacular. My holiday wish for you all is that each of you finds something in your life worth celebrating and connects with someone to celebrate with.
