The Play That Goes Wrong

June 11–28, 2026 | Bagley Wright Theater

In This Program

From the Artistic Director

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the return of The Play That Goes Wrong! Whether this is your first (or fifth!) time seeing the show, we’re thrilled you’re here to see if the Cornley Drama Society can finally get it right. (Fingers crossed.)

The Play That Goes Wrong is a part of London-based Mischief Theatre’s highly successful slate of “Goes Wrong” plays (and a television show on Amazon Prime), which continue to delight audiences of all ages in London, New York, and around the world.

This locally made co-production with Oregon’s Portland Center Stage (PCS) features a cast and creative team made up of theater-makers from both cities. After the show played to packed houses and critical acclaim this past fall, our artisans packed up and sent the set, costumes, and props down to Portland, where the show played a sold-out run. Following this Seattle reprise, the show will go on yet again, this time as part of Arizona Theater Company’s upcoming 2026/27 Season.

Part of the show’s success lies in the way it functions as a love letter to the unpredictable and eternally hopeful spirit of live theater. We’re not here to make fun of the well-meaning, theater-loving, ever-intrepid Cornley Drama Society as they strive to make you forget the more than 200 stage mishaps you’re about to see today. Still, as things go wrong during their “opening night” performance of The Murder at Haversham Manor, we can’t help but laugh out loud in shared recognition. The troupe’s unwavering determination to carry on—and their unshakable belief that their luck will somehow turn around—is a hallmark of the human condition. What else can we do but our best when chaos reigns and things don’t go our way?

The theatrical magic of this play lies not just in its humor, but in the intricate craft required to make the on-stage mayhem seem effortless. It takes precision, timing, trust, and collaboration behind the scenes for everything to go wrong in all the right ways. In that sense, The Play That Goes Wrong is also about our theater community working in harmony. This blend of laughter and optimism (no matter how naïve!) made it an easy choice to bring back to the Bagley Wright Theater—the first full re-mount of a #BuiltBySeattleRep production in our history

As part of our upcoming 2026/27 Season, we will be “going wrong” again this winter with Peter Pan Goes Wrong. Don’t miss Cornley’s latest attempt as they tackle the beloved story of Peter Pan as (literally) high-flying mishaps deliver non-stop laughter for the whole family. Because nothing more can go wrong... right?

I hope to see you at our season starter, a world premiere musical from the producers of Come From Away, Freak The Mighty, beginning July 30. Check out our variety of subscription package offerings to enjoy Freak The Mighty, Peter Pan Goes Wrong, and so much more in our 2026/27 Season—visit seattlerep.org/subscribe. There’s something in our new lineup for everyone!

Until next time,

#BuiltBySeattleRep in Action: To Go Wrong, Everything Has to Go (REALLY) Right

Beyond the Stage

Did You Know...? Seattle Rep is one of the few arts organizations in the region to have on-site production shops in the same building as our theaters, rehearsal halls, and administrative offices. Our skilled local artisans come together to create the costumes, props, and scenery—plus design the environmental details like lighting and sound—that bring stunning worlds to life on Seattle Rep’s stages.

The Play That Goes Wrong is a show that needs not only comedic skill and timing, but virtuosic production design and execution to support the action on stage. The set itself is really another character in the play! With safety at the forefront, designers and artisans are tasked with creating a setting where every object, every wall, every piece of furniture can be used—often in unconventional ways—to communicate increasing chaos and destruction at every turn. Everything on stage needs to go really right in order to go really wrong.

Take a peek behind the curtain at the artisans behind the magic.
