Welcome

A Note From Seattle Theatre Group

On behalf of Seattle Theatre Group’s staff, board, and volunteers, welcome to the historic Paramount Theatre for this performance of Stereophonic, an extraordinary and inspiring play launching its US tour right here in Seattle! In 2024, Stereophonic won five Tony Awards: Best Play, Best Performance by Featured Actor in a Play (Will Brill), Best Direction of a Play (Daniel Aukin), Best Scenic Design of a Play (David Zinn), and Best Sound Design of a Play (Ryan Rumery). We’re honored to present the launch of this tour and to have you here experiencing it with us.

Growing up a musician in Los Angeles, the recording studio is a familiar place to me. Before seeing Stereophonic on Broadway, I’d never considered a recording studio as a setting for a theatrical story, and that’s exactly where this production brings you. From my own experience, the recording studio provides both an intimate and collaborative environment. The process itself is rooted in trust, respect, and service to the song. If any of that erodes, things can go awry and that sonic magic can evaporate just like water! Stereophonic truly accomplishes a rare glimpse into both the creative process and the beautiful music that’s produced from it.

I’d be remiss to not point out that the music in Stereophonic was written by Will Butler, a former member of the great indie rock band Arcade Fire. I suspect Mr. Butler performed with Arcade Fire at The Paramount in September of 2005—we are thrilled to have his music back on our stage!

Speaking of musicians, the historic Kerry Hall is STG’s newly acquired hub for community-centered arts programming in Capitol Hill. We have affordable rehearsal spaces available for local and community-based artists to rent for music, dance, theatre, and more. STG is committed to supporting local artists to ensure our fabulous city turns out the next generation of musicians. To learn more about Kerry Hall and make a rehearsal room request, visit www.stgpresents.org/kerry-hall or call (206) 880-2208.

Wherever you experience the arts this fall, we’re grateful you’ve chosen to be with us at The Paramount. Now sit back, relax, and let the music do the talking in Stereophonic.

Kindest regards,

Josh LaBelle
Executive Director
Seattle Theatre Group

Stereophonic: The Radio Edit

(an author’s note)

I’m writing this from my apartment in Brooklyn, just as we’re starting tour rehearsals. It’s a bittersweet moment, because after 10 years of writing and building this thing in workshop after workshop—and two full years after that of rehearsing various iterations of it (including the replacement cast for Broadway and West End productions) we are nearing the end of our journey with a project that has changed all our lives.

The night before the Tonys, Daniel Aukin and I were loitering onstage at the Koch Theatre as part of a rehearsal for the broadcast—and just then it hit me, how absolutely crazy all of this was. I said, “At some point we need to go to a coffee shop or something and sit down and process what’s happened.” Daniel looked at me very pointedly. He said, “David, we will never be able to process this!” And we both broke out in peals of crazy laughter—because it was so hilariously true.

As artists, our successes and failures are equally absurd. We are simply hostages to our impulses: we do what excites us and we try to make something we love. Everything else is outside of our control. This production is our labor of love.

To accommodate the demands of a national tour, this version of Stereophonic has been cut down to just under 3 hours. We have affectionately dubbed this cut of the play “The Radio Edit” and it was both a challenge and a delight to pare the play down and get it even sharper and more focused. We hope you enjoy it as much as we loved making it for you.

With gratitude,
David Adjmi
