LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Dear Friends,
The holidays at The 5th Avenue Theatre are pure magic. From the moment the lights dim to the final curtain call, something extraordinary happens—people come together. Families, friends, and neighbors fill this historic theater with laughter, awe, and joy. It’s one of those places where everyone seems to have a story: the first visit, the show that made them fall in love with musicals, the person they shared that moment with. Those memories, and the connections they spark, are what make The 5th a true Seattle treasure.
For 99 years, this theater has been a home for artistry, imagination, and community. It’s where out-of-this-world stories take shape, young artists find their voice, and audiences like you rediscover joy and wonder. The 5th enriches Seattle in ways you can see, and in countless ways you can’t. When our seats are full, local restaurants thrive. When our education programs visit schools, creativity takes root. When the lights go up on stage, so does the spirit of this city.
There are many people who believe that Seattle—and the world—are better with The 5th in it. I’m one of them. And if you’re reading this, chances are, you are too. Together, we can ensure this incredible institution continues to grow, inspire, and connect people for generations to come.
This is your moment. To laugh, to cry, to share in a little bit of musical joy with the people around you. When the music fades and the applause is over, I hope you’ll carry that feeling forward by being part of what sustains it.
Turn to page 36 to learn more about how you can support The 5th.
With gratitude, joy, and a wish for happy holidays,
Bill Berry
Executive & Artistic Director, The 5th Avenue Theatre Company

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Let us take a moment to remember that The 5th Avenue Theatre and the communities we serve are on the land and waterways of the Coast Salish people who have continuously inhabited our region since time immemorial. They are the original storytellers and theater-makers of this place we call home. We also acknowledge and honor the Tribal nations across Washington State and the many Indigenous peoples from across the country who live and work in the Seattle area. As we step into this new period of The 5th’s history, we hope to honor their legacies and bring greater attention to their continuing fight for equity and recognition.

There’s Room for Every Christmas Movie on the Nice List
by Beth Pollack
Elf was a box office success when it was first released in movie theatres in 2003 and garnered enthusiastic and favorable reviews. Besides the Broadway musical, it also inspired an animated special and video game, and the original movie consistently makes appearances on lists of the greatest Christmas movies of all time. Why do people love Elf so much – and why do people delight in Christmas movies in general? To find an answer, we need to examine a different popular secular Christmas story.
Imagine this beloved Christmas tale: a grumpy older man, frustrated with what he sees as the misplaced priorities of the people around him during Christmas, changes his tune after encountering mystifying beings who help him realize the power of investing in his community. It’s A Christmas Carol, right? Well, yes – but it’s also roughly the outline of Walter Hobbs’ journey in Elf, as well as the general plotline for characters found in many other classic Christmas stories.
Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is synonymous with the Christmas season; the original novella has never been out of print and was such an immediate sensation that it was reprinted 11 times within the first year of its publication in 1843. When Dickens wrote his now-immortal tale, many of the Christmas traditions we might take for granted didn’t exist; for context, 1843 was the same year that the Christmas card was invented. The phrase “Merry Christmas” even comes from Dickens’ own writing! In many ways, Dickens formed some of the secular expectations that surround celebrations of Christmas today through his work and these expectations lead to the nostalgia many feel during the Christmas holiday.
