LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
If laughter really is the best medicine, then you’re in exactly the right place! There is something wonderfully freeing about walking into a theater, taking your seat, and giving yourself permission to laugh—out loud, without restraint, and in the company of hundreds of people who are ready to do the same. That shared release is one of the great gifts of live theater, and Monty Python’s SPAMALOT delivers it in gloriously absurd fashion.
This is a show we’ve been eagerly
anticipating. From the first coconut-clopping steps to the last outrageous punchline, SPAMALOT reminds us that silliness has value, comedy has purpose, and joy doesn’t need to be complicated. In a world that can feel heavy, choosing laughter is an act of optimism.
At The 5th Avenue Theatre Company, we believe that musicals don’t all have to do the same thing. Some move us to tears. Some challenge us. And some—like this one—exist to make us laugh until our sides hurt. All of them matter. All of them bring us together. And all of them remind us why gathering in a room like this still feels so powerful.
While we’ve already got a quest to find the Holy Grail at hand, we’re enthusiastically looking ahead to our next season! And our goal is simple: we want you to feel confident saying “yes” to subscribing. We’ve chosen a season full of big theatrical moments balanced by heart, laughter, wonder, and reflection. We’ll announce our epic 2026/27 season in early March!
For now, though, sit back, relax, and enjoy the nonsense. Thanks for being here, for laughing with us, and for being part of The 5th community.
Yours (not entirely seriously),
Bill Berry
Executive & Artistic Director, The 5th Avenue Theatre Company

MONTY PYTHON’S COMEDY IS KING
(EVEN IF YOU DIDN’T VOU DIDN’T VOTE FOR THEM)
by Beth Pollack
Monty Python was a British comedy troupe consisting of founders Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. All the Pythons had worked as writers and comedy performers for other television shows before forming Monty Python; their similar senses of humor as well as a shared desire to push boundaries and break comedy norms drove them to develop their ini-tial work on Monty Python’s Flying Circus, a sketch show that ran for 45 episodes from 1969-1974 on the BBC.
In 1974, work began on their first feature film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. As was the case with Flying Circus, each of the Pythons performed multiple roles over the course of the film; the film was also directed by the two Terrys of the group, Terry Jones and Terry Gil-liam. The film was financed by a variety of rock bands looking for tax breaks, including Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.
Adapted from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python’s Spamalot premiered on Broadway in 2005 and won three Tony Awards®, including Best Musical. The project was spearheaded by Eric Idle, who wrote the book and collaborated on the music and lyrics with British composer John Du Prez. As a collective, the Py-thons would go on to create a total of five theatrical films, a series of TV specials, more than 15 albums, and multiple stage shows featuring sketches, music, and dance.
It is hard to overstate the influence of Monty Python; their effect on comedy has been likened to The Beatles’ effect on music. Prominent comedians from both sides of The Pond have cited their work as a for-mative influence; films and television shows often pay homage to their work; comedy writers cite the various ways in which Monty Python changed how comedic scripts are crafted; actors reference Python cre-ations when explaining how they fashion their own characterizations.
Monty Python is such a cultural force that their influence extends be-yond the artistic world. There are asteroids named after Monty Python and its members, as is the programming language Python; Python also includes several references to the Pythons and their creations. Prehis-toric creatures, genetic mutations, ice cream flavors, beer, and even a compost heap in New Zealand all bear Python-related names. “Pytho-nesque” has become a commonly accepted word found in standard dictionaries. Monty Python’s work is so pervasive that a casual fan might not even realize the ways in which it has become a part of our everyday experiences; for example, using the word “spam” to refer-ence unsolicited email is itself a reference to Monty Python’s 1970 “Spam” sketch.
If you delight in quoting their iconic sketches, you’re in for a treat with Monty Python’s Spamalot and if you’re Python-literate under duress, you can always call out, “Help! Help! I’m being repressed!” – surely a Python fan is in earshot and would love to assist in finishing the scene.
