The Bay Area’s weekly roundup of arts, culture, and community | October 2 to 8, 2026
Today we want to make things easy on you. So we’re highlighting the accessible performances that are happening in the Bay Area this week. You don’t even have to leave your inbox, we’ll list them right here for you.
This weekend, Mary, Queen of Scots is on stage at San Francisco Opera. Tonight, Saturday and Sunday, you can catch a powerful performance with powerful subtitles—they are so big, their official name is actually “supertitles.” While these are available at all SF Opera performances due to most operas being sung in a foreign language, that doesn’t mean they can’t double for those who are deaf or have difficulties hearing.
Also this weekend, across the Bay at Berkeley Rep, closed captioning will be available for The Cook, a “spellbinding” play by Eduardo Machado. And if you are just a little further south, there is a fairytale gone very wrong at South Bay Musical Theatre—ASL interpretation will be available for Once Upon a Mattress on October 3.
If you want to take in a weekday show, you won’t miss a dramatic moment between Christine Daaé, the Phantom, or the other guy (we support the Phantom in this house) as Phantom of the Opera is playing at Broadway San Jose with closed captioning on October 7 and 8. — Ciara
