Director’s Note
In 2018, I had the opportunity to direct the world premiere musical adaptation, Persuasion. Some of you may remember that Taproot Theatre production. And if you do, then you’ll remember the powerful voice of Cayman Ilika (playing Anne Elliot) and the comedic talent of Kate Jaeger (playing Mary Musgrove).
One of my favorite things about being a director is that I get opportunities to work with so many amazing artists. So, after Persuasion, when Cayman and Kate came to me with the idea of working together on Always… Patsy Cline, I jumped at the chance. The music was great, the story was fun, but most of all these two amazing performers turned the show into a very special audience experience.
I directed Cayman and Kate in a Taproot Theatre production of Always… Patsy Cline that we performed in our Isaac Studio Theatre in 2019. It was a limited run with only 19 performances, but the show garnered great reviews and earned both the actors nominations for “best leading performance in a musical” at the Theatre Puget Sound Gregory Awards that year.
Since 2019, Taproot’s production of Always… Patsy Cline has toured to theatres in Michigan and California, but we’ve never had a chance to bring it back to Seattle and perform it for our Taproot Theatre subscriber audience.
UNTIL NOW!
I am thrilled to bring this beautiful show back to Seattle and reunite Cayman Ilika and Kate Jaeger on Taproot Theatre’s Mainstage. For me, being able to include Always… Patsy Cline as part of our 2025 Season felt like an overdue gift for our audience. A little piece of joy that I’ve been wishing everybody could experience. And now, at last, we get to share it together!
So, whether you are a Taproot regular or you are brand new to our theatre, I want to say welcome! Thank you for joining us for an evening of celebrating enduring songs, timeless memories, and friendships that stand the test of time.
Enjoy the show!
Karen Lund

Dramaturgy: Patsy Cline
(1932–1963)
One of the most popular female country singers in recording history, Patsy Cline achieved icon status as the first solo female artist elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame. She helped break down the gender barrier in this musical genre, thanks in large part to her smooth-sounding, emotive voice. During her brief singing career, she produced the #1 jukebox hit of all time, the country music standard, “Crazy.”
Born on September 8, 1932, in Winchester, Virginia, Cline’s birth name was Virginia Patterson Hensley.
At the age of eight she taught herself how to play the piano and later found her passion for singing. Cline dropped out of school when she was 16 and went to work because her family desperately needed the money. She found jobs wherever she could, including at a poultry plant and a local soda shop. In her free time, Cline started her singing career, performing on local radio stations and entering several singing contests.
In 1957, Cline’s career hit a turning point. She was invited to perform on the Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts show. The young woman with the big voice wowed audiences with her performance of “Walkin’ After Midnight,” winning the program’s competition. After her television appearance that song became a popular hit.
Continuing into the early 1960s, Cline had a recording contract with Decca Records and enjoyed great success on the country and pop charts. She also joined the cast of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee—a true sign of her place in country music. In 1961, she released some of her greatest hits, including “I Fall to Pieces” and “Crazy.” These titles were hits on both pop and country music charts; cementing Cline’s reputation as a singing star even outside the country music genre. 1961 was also the year that Cline survived a traumatic car crash.
In 1962, Cline again hit the number one spot on the country charts with “She’s Got You.” She started touring and performed with other big name country stars like Johnny Cash, June Carter and George Jones. Cline was always supportive of other female country artists and tried to help them with their careers. Her friendship with Loretta Lynn, for example, is documented in the 2019 Lifetime movie, Patsy & Loretta.
Cline’s own career was all too brief. She died on March 5, 1963, in a plane crash in Camden, Tennessee. After her death, her version of “Sweet Dreams” was released and became her final hit song.
Rightly considered to be one of country music’s greatest vocalists, Cline was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1973. Today, her music remains popular with fans around the world and many of them make the pilgrimage to her hometown of Winchester, Virginia, to visit the Patsy Cline Historic Home.

References & Reflections: Mixed Media by Edie Everette
May 12–June 21, 2025

Edie Everette’s artwork reflects memories while referencing the detritus of everyday life. Her assemblages gather snippets of material culture that tell us her stories while somehow also seeming familiar to us.
Don’t those paper cut-outs look like the ones I created as a child?
Isn’t that the same gingham on my mother’s apron?
Those bits of letters remind me of Louise’s letters to and from her friend Patsy Cline.
These materials are not just ephemera or cast offs. They spark reminiscence and nostalgia, just as the music—and persona—of Patsy Cline does for so many of us.
—Edie Everette
Edie’s art practice encompasses painting, collage, cartoons, textiles, and other media. She is also a writer, art critic, cartoonist, illustrator, and instructor at Gage Academy of Art.
All works are for sale unless marked by a red dot. Please visit Edie’s website at edieeverette.com for more details about her work and to contact the artist about purchase inquiries.
