Unless you’ve been too distracted by planning your summer vacation (I know I have), you have probably heard that San Francisco Symphony has announced their next Music Director. Elim Chan will fill the position in September 2027 and has immediately taken up the title of Music Director Designate.

“In Elim Chan, we have found a musician of unusual gifts and a leader of equal substance—a rare combination, and the one behind her remarkable international rise,” said San Francisco Symphony Chief Executive Officer Matthew Spivey.

Get to know Chan’s style and personality a little bit before she becomes the 13th leader of SF Symphony. Chan conducts the orchestra this weekend in a program including Richard Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, Hector Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’été featuring mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke as soloist, and Claude Debussy’s La Mer. A welcome celebration will take place after the performance with music, food and beverages.
